Description: CASIMIR LEFAUCHEUX--- Ser. No. 438 (1858), 28-Bore Bernard Damascus. Apparently built for a "Royal", this 28-bore, 27-1/2" barreled TRUE MUSEUM PIECE which has original and "Signed" Leopold Bernard barrels in pristine and as-newly-made internal condition. Minimum barrel wall thicknesses are: 35 thou. + at the muzzle and gradually increase in thickness to 50 thou. at midway down toward the breech (where of course the barrels' walls gradually become much thicker). Bores are beautiful, and externally, the barrel color has faded by at most only 10-20% on this very early mid-19th century gun which obviously spent little time afield- and most likely the majority of it in a "Royal's" elaborately carved gun cabinet. The "rediculously-figured" stock suffers from a few tiny stress cracks at the "head" which are not structural faults as they are only in the very thin shell of wood surrounding the action, and can be made invisible (if one wishes to fool with mother nature). Stress cracks (which follow the grain) often evolve over time when thin and highly figured inletted wood is wrongly used at the head of the stock. This stock itself ,was carved more than 166 years ago, so it has been susceptable to more than a century and a half of temperature-change which induced the stress-cracking which over time has had only minimal affect. These stress cracks do not affect the stock's stability or strength and have only been highlighted to show in the photos--in reality they are only "cosmetic" in nature. Perhaps built for a usually small and "Royal" frenchman or woman, the stock measurements are: LOP : 13-1/2", DAH 2", DAC 1-11/16", Right-hand Cast: 1/4" (indicates "shooting flying" experience ?) Chambers: 2- 7/16 ", Weight: 5 lbs--8.2 Oz. (fabulously stocked with uniquely- beautiful "Bird's Eye" Oak) Some history to consider about Casimir Lefaucheux, Inventor extraordinaire : HE WAS THE SOLE INVENTOR IN 1836 OF: THE BREAK-OPEN BREECHLOADING GUN ; THE CARTRIDGE (Both Pinfire & Centrefire) ; and the ENCLOSED PRIMER !!!!!!!!!! ******* For More Information About Casimir Lefaucheux (and any other gunmaker or gun): Go to our Index & Readers and research using key words to find all DGJ published content ******* The two articles below - especially the DGJ article of 2001-- immediately come to my memory !
