Rigby (London) Sporting Best .270 Winchester. Built on a Mauser Model 98 action and wearing Rigby serial 6487, this light and lively rifle has a 22-inch barrel (.625-inch muzzle diameter, front sight base with stippled top and face, folding and locking hood, brass-beaded blade) and sling eye. There is no provision for a rear sight. Features include a reshaped bolt handle with a checkered knob (five bordered teardrop panels and engraved bottom), custom shroud with two-position wing safety, trim AA-grade walnut stock (ebony forend tip, wrap checkering with partially-Mullered borders, crossbolt, serrated butt plate, steel grip cap, toe line sling eye and an initial plate (engraved “A”). ENGRAVING: “J. Rigby & Co, London, England” and “Caliber .270 Winchester" ride the barrel. Front and rear rings are sided with delicate scroll. Signed M.A. Hunt, the trap features an outstanding bordered bust of a roe deer supported by scroll. CAPACITY: Six rounds (five plus one). The extractor closes smoothly over “dropped in” rounds. Feeding/extraction/ejection are nearly effortless and most positive. DIMENSIONS: Weight is 7.0 pounds and the length-of-pull is 13.5 inches. CONDITION: The bore is bright with a modest hint of frosting. Rifling is sharp. Metal finish may have been refreshed, although all markings and engraving are tack sharp. The top of both bridges (under the bases) is discolored, but there is no visible evidence of extra holes or plugging. As the history is unknown, it is possible the rifle was rebarreled/engraved at some point in its history. Regardless, metal finish stands at approximately 85 percent. Color case over the grip cap has faded. Wood is approximately 80 percent with slivering at the tang and comb point. CASE: A canvas case with leather trim/straps, rod/tips and label is present. The interior material is spliced (upper lid) and the case is overall in fair condition. The price is firm and layaway is available.
