The Remington Model 788 was designed to capture a lower price market that the Model 700, and succeeded better than expected, even tot the point of scavenging sales from the Model 700. It is unique for the use of plain hardwood for the stock, and having a raised, Monte Carlo type comb. The bolt locks up using a 9-lug arrangement at the rear of the bolt. .308 Winchester
