Published South African Model 1885 Guedes Rifle and Bayonet
Description: Serial #4158, 8 x 60Rmm, 32 1/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a Steyr-made rifle and was one of the 40,000 examples ordered by the Kingdom of Portugal in 1886. The metal retains 85-90% of the original blue finish with some gray fading at the muzzle, as well as silvering along the high edges and projections. All numbers are matching, and the frame has crisp Luis I royal cypher on the right side, and Steyr roundel on the left. The top of the frame has a large "Z.A.R." South African property stamp. The walnut forend and buttstock are also numbered to the gun, and have a few scattered handling marks and blemishes throughout the arsenal reapplied oil finish, along with a clear Steyr roundel on the right side of the buttstock. The front sight is a modern replacement, but the original front sight blade is included. The rifle comes with an original ramrod and saber bayonet. The bayonet measures 23 1/2" overall with an 18 1/2"yataghan blade having single, stopped fullers. The blade and hilt fittings have been lightly cleaned to white, and the original Steyr markings are still clear and legible on the ricasso obverse: "OE / WG"; and "Steyr 1886" along the back edge. Some mild freckling is present on the quillon and muzzle-ring, as well as a few minor impact marks on the pommel. The smooth walnut grips are in fine shape with some minor handling marks, and the original, metal scabbard is also included. A modern white leather sling has been fitted to the rifle as well. These high quality rifles were designed and adopted by Portugal, who contracted with Steyr in Austria for the manufacture of 40,000 rifles, as well as their attendant 8mm cartridges. Unfortunately, the adoption of magazine repeaters by other countries rendered the Guedes obsolete before production even started and the order was cancelled after 18,000 rifles were built. Approximately 7,050 of these rifles were purchased by South African Boers and were issued to commandoes prior to the wider availability of Westley Richards Martini-Henrys, and later Mauser rifles. This very rifle and bayonet set is pictured on page 347 of "The Illustrated Directory Of Guns" by David Miller (2005) along with a concise This is one of the best examples of a ZAR Guedes we have yet seen, and it rates excellent condition overall.
