Griffin & Howe Butt Plate from the 1920's to the Mid 1930's
Description: UPDATE: 10/10/2025: I had ten viewers look at this yesterday. Two of them wanted to know what shipping and insurance would run. Shipping and Insurance via Priority Mail to the lower 48 states will be a total of $15.00. Hope this helps. Price Lowered. Response to message received: These plates were made in Germany and sent to all the best gunmakers of the time in the 1920's and 1930's. They included G&H, Owen, Hoffman, Linden, etc. This particular plate was from the collection of Cliff Eitel, former shop foreman at Griffin % Howe. A person emailed and asked about the application of this plate to particular guns. The plate does not have much engraving. These plates were imported from Germany and then engraved by the firm that was selling a custom gun. Griffin & Howe during this time period would pretty much do whatever the customer wished when it came to building a rifle. That being said, I have seen this style plate more often on single shot rifles and converted Winchester Model 54 rifles that G&H built. I have a database of all the G&H guns ever built, and it gets larger every day. I currently have over 800 guns listed, so, I feel that I can make a pretty good judgement of what types of guns and their specifications were throughout the years. Again, G&H would do whatever the customer wanted, but, as far as I can tell, the above-mentioned guns were often an application for this type of non-trap butt. And, if you examine all the G&H guns that have come up for sale in the last 20 years, this observation is pretty well evident. Many of the "Elaborate" fully (usually Kornbrath engraved) guns often had the engraved trap buttplates. There was a very good reason for this. The vacant wood where the trap opened up could hold the Lyman 48 Slide. The Lyman 48 sight was used on both the Springfield and Mauser actions. The vacant wood could also be drilled out to hold 2 or 3 additional cartridges. I have seen both done with the G&H trap-butts when the trap was opened up. Again, Griffin & Howe would make a rifle for a customer with just about any personal request, as long as it didn't deviate on their "Standards" for what a fine rifle should look like. And, in my database and catalog, this is more and more evident every day that I add to it. True research is "hard core" data. Not projected heresay. I have hard core data on the G&H builds. There is a link to G&H # 921 in 7 m/m which had this same style plate. If you want to see it, just email me and I will send it to you . . . . A note on these Germany-made butt plates and their engraving. Rudolph Kornbrath engraved many of these butt plates for Griffin & Howe, Sedgley, Hoffman Arms, Etc. What was really interesting was that seemed to have "Patterns" that he used that were different for each gunmaker. I have had Sedgley and Hoffmans, and the style of engraving on their metal butt plates was unique, unlike the engraving used on G&H guns. It seemed as though each separate gunmaker had their own separate style. And, as added "Provenance," this butt came from a retired G&H Shop Foreman, which I have noted below. If you want a picture of a Model 54 with this similar style butt plate, email me and I will send it to you . . . . For sale is an Original Griffin and Howe Butt Plate that would have been used on their custom built rifles from the 1920's to the mid to late 1930's. Griffin & Howe imported these from Germany (this is stamped on the back side and pictured). It is lightly engraved. It is the non-trap variety. Griffin and Howe used this particular butt plate on their single shot rifles, and I have seen 3 on those particular rifles. I have also seen 3 of these used on the Griffin & Howe Custom Made Winchester Model 54 Winchesters ("Depression Era Sporters") when they put new stocks on those guns. This was origianlly part of the collection of a retired Griffin & Howe shop foreman. The listing is for the butt plate only. I have no screws for this butt plate. Dimensions are 5 and 5/16" (Length) by 1 5/8" (Width at the widest point--near the top). It is just a tad bit bigger than a Standard Model 70 Style Buttplate. The top spur looks as though it may have been bent up slightly. You can see this in Pictures # 4 and # 6. I'm sure that it could be heated and bent down slightly if need be. These are simply impossible to find anymore. Call or email me if you have any questons Price: $389.00 Contact Seller |
