THE ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE 49TH REGIMENT VIRGINIA VOLs BELT PLATE
Description: I first saw this plate on an estate sale out of Virginia Beach, Va., at a nominal starting bid. There was limited information except it came from a local estate that was being sold. I liked the range of toning and patina I saw in the pictures knowing this was impossible to artifically reproduce. I did not know at the time about the history of this plate and so did the research described here. The 49th REGIMENT VIRGINIA VOLs was mustered in 1861 and the history should be well known to CW historians. This 49TH REGIMENT VRGINIA VOLs buckle with the piece of belt still attached pictured below on a piece of rough weave red wool cloth in the case as pictured with the CW bullets came from an estate in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I can find no other like it available anywhere other than the reproductions of this made by Parsley Brass , also located in Virginia. I contacted the owners of Parsley Brass about how the reproductions originated and they related the following information to me. The origin of the zinc master used to produce all the repros of this belt plate, pictured in the B&W photo below is an interesting piece of information. This is the only reproduction of this plate made by anyone. Herbert Parsley, the founder of Parsley brass, apparerntly located an original, This One?, and then had the zinc master shown below in B&W, rendered by an engineer from a photograph, and most likely measurements, he took of what could only have been an original 49th belt plate. Otherwise, what would be the point to copy a copy with so much cost and effort involved. Parsley Brass is the only company that makes a repro of this plate. The Repro is measureably bigger than the buckle being sold here in all areas, wider, thivker, and the letters as slightly larger and not as sharply defined.. This buckle appears to be the buckle Herb Parsley photographed to create that zinc master. There are also other similar original buckles of almost identical design attrributed to the1st Regiment Virginia Volunteers. That suggests this style of buckle was certainly available to purchase during the period if it was not actually an issued item. None have been battlefield found or are otherwise known that I am aware of so probably special order by the wearer. The picture of the repro I bought from Parsley Brass to directly compare with the Original had a false patina applied. I aked current management at Parsley Brass if the multitone patina on the "Original" could be duplicated by them, they said it was not possible to do. There are obvious variations and flaws in the casting of the repro not present on the Original. There are also hundreds of micro abrasions/use scars visible on the Original, and none on the repro. Also, so far, no one I have contacted can tell me any way to reproduce the variety of toning and patina present on the Original. The Repro is actually measureably LARGER than the original, the letters are slightly bigger and not as well defined with casting flaws not on the original. SH&I will be $100.00 with full insurance for value Priority Mail with Tracking. M.O receives immediate shipping, checks MUST clear minimum of 7 days before shipping. 10 day exam return unaltered if not as described, minus shipping. Thanks, Mark There are too many people who are willing to make claims that this, that, or the other item is fake, repro, or fantasy but these detractors NEVER provide ANY documentation to me substantiating their claim, so those opinions are worthless. I am only interested in representing every item I list as exactly what they are whatever that may be and describe these various items in that manner. Price: POR Contact Seller |
